The Vampire Crab (Geosesarma dennerle), also known as the Vampire Crab or Red Vampire Crab, is a small, colorful crab native to Southeast Asia. These crabs are appreciated for their striking appearance and unique behaviors. Proper care is essential to keep them healthy and ensure they thrive in captivity. Here’s a comprehensive guide to caring for Vampire Crabs:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group of Vampire Crabs. Larger tanks (20 gallons or more) are preferable to provide ample space for roaming and to help maintain stable conditions.
  • Aquascape: Create a habitat with a mix of land and water areas. They need both a dry land area and a shallow water section. Use substrates like soil, sand, or a mix of both. Provide hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and decorations.
  • Substrate: Use a substrate that retains moisture and allows for burrowing. A mix of soil, sand, and leaf litter works well. Ensure the substrate is deep enough for them to dig and hide.
  • Plants: Include hardy, aquatic plants in the tank, like Java fern, Anubias, or moss. These plants can thrive in the moist environment and provide additional hiding places.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Maintain a water temperature between 72-80°F (22-27°C). Use a heater if necessary to keep the temperature stable.
  • pH: Vampire Crabs prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Consistent pH levels are important for their health.
  • Hardness: They can adapt to a range of water hardness levels, but a general hardness (GH) of 5-10 dGH is suitable.
  • Water Quality: Keep the water clean and well-filtered. Perform regular water changes of 10-20% weekly to maintain good water quality. Use a sponge filter or a gentle filter that does not create strong currents.

Land Area and Humidity

  • Land Area: Provide a significant land area where the crabs can climb, explore, and bask. Use materials like rocks or driftwood to create a varied terrain.
  • Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels in the tank, around 70-80%. Use a misting system or regularly spray the land area with water to keep it moist. A shallow water dish should be available for drinking and moisture.

Feeding

  • Diet: Vampire Crabs are omnivorous. Feed them a varied diet including high-quality crab pellets, live or frozen foods (such as worms or insects), and fresh vegetables (like cucumber, zucchini, or leafy greens). Occasional fruits can also be offered.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 2-3 times a week. Offer small amounts of food to avoid overfeeding and to prevent water quality issues. Remove uneaten food promptly to prevent decay.
