Nerite snails are popular freshwater aquarium inhabitants known for their algae-eating capabilities and attractive patterns. They’re relatively low-maintenance and can add an interesting dynamic to your tank. Here’s a guide to keeping your Nerite snails healthy and happy:

Tank Setup

1. Tank Size: Nerite snails do well in various tank sizes, but ensure your tank is at least 10 gallons to provide a stable environment.

2. Tank Environment: They prefer a well-maintained tank with plenty of surfaces to graze on, such as rocks, glass, and plants. They are particularly effective at cleaning algae from hard surfaces.

3. Substrate: A soft substrate like sand or fine gravel is ideal. This prevents any potential injury to their soft undersides and allows them to move around comfortably.

Water Conditions

1. Temperature: Maintain a stable water temperature between 72-78°F (22-26°C). This range suits most freshwater aquariums.

2. pH Level: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water. Aim for a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.

3. Water Hardness: Nerite snails do well in moderately hard to hard water. Aim for a water hardness of 6-12 dGH. They require calcium in the water for their shell health.

4. Filtration: A reliable filtration system is crucial for maintaining clean and well-oxygenated water. Regular water changes (about 25-30% weekly) are also important to keep the environment healthy.

Diet

1. Diet: Nerite snails are primarily algae eaters and will graze on algae on tank surfaces. Supplement their diet with algae wafers or other calcium-rich snail food if algae is insufficient.

2. Feeding: If algae is scarce, provide supplemental food. Feed them once or twice a week, offering only what they can consume in a few hours to avoid excess food in the tank.
