Similis Corydoras (Corydoras similis), also known as the Violet Corydoras or Smudge Spot Corydoras, is a peaceful and popular freshwater catfish known for its striking coloration and active, social behavior. Native to South American waters, especially the Rio Madeira and its tributaries in Brazil, these bottom-dwellers are well-suited for community tanks. Here’s a detailed care guide for Similis Corydoras:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a group of Similis Corydoras. Since they are schooling fish, they should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals. A larger tank (30 gallons or more) will provide more space and encourage natural behaviors.
  • Aquascape: Create a natural environment with plenty of hiding places using driftwood, smooth rocks, and aquarium-safe plants like Java fern, Anubias, and Amazon swords. Similis Corydoras appreciate having areas to explore and places to retreat if they feel threatened.
  • Substrate: Use a soft, sandy substrate to protect their sensitive barbels and underbellies. Sand is ideal as it allows them to forage naturally without the risk of injury, which is common with rough or sharp substrates.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. They can thrive under low to moderate light, and using floating plants can help diffuse light and create shaded areas.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Similis Corydoras prefer a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C). Keeping the temperature stable is important for their health and well-being.
  • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. A stable pH is more important than trying to maintain a specific number.
  • Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 2-12 dGH.
  • Water Quality: These fish are sensitive to poor water conditions, so regular water changes of 20-30% weekly are necessary. Use a water conditioner to treat tap water before adding it to the tank, and regularly test water parameters to ensure they remain within acceptable ranges.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: A high-quality filtration system is essential to maintain water quality. Canister filters or sponge filters that provide gentle water movement are ideal for Similis Corydoras. They prefer well-oxygenated water but are not fans of strong currents.
  • Water Flow: Similis Corydoras appreciate gentle water flow, mimicking the slow-moving streams of their natural habitat. Avoid strong currents, as these can cause stress and exhaustion.

Feeding

  • Diet: Similis Corydoras are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. Provide a balanced diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex worms. They will also scavenge for leftover food at the bottom of the tank.
  • Variety: Offering a variety of foods helps ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients and supports their overall health.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice daily, ensuring that food reaches the bottom of the tank where they naturally feed. Avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food can lead to water quality issues.
