The Pristella Tetra (Pristella maxillaris), also known as the X-Ray Tetra due to its transparent body, is a hardy, peaceful fish that's perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They are known for their resilience and compatibility with a wide variety of tank mates, making them a popular choice in community tanks. Here’s a detailed care guide for these stunning fish:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group of Pristella Tetras (5-6 individuals). However, a larger tank is better if you're planning to keep a larger school or other tank mates.
  • Aquascape: Pristella Tetras prefer a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas. Include live or artificial plants like Java ferns, Anubias, and Amazon swords. Adding driftwood or smooth rocks for hiding places will also make them feel secure.
  • Substrate: They are not picky about substrate, but dark-colored sand or fine gravel will help show off their colors. A darker substrate also mimics their natural environment.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting works best. Too much light may cause stress, while subdued lighting creates a more natural and comfortable environment for them.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Pristella Tetras thrive in a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C). They are quite adaptable, but keeping the temperature consistent within this range is important for their health.
  • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: Pristella Tetras do well in soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH.
  • Water Quality: These fish are quite hardy but still benefit from clean water. Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) and proper filtration will keep the water quality stable and prevent stress or disease.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: A standard aquarium filter will work fine. Pristella Tetras don't need a powerful filter, so a sponge filter or a small hang-on-back filter will do the job.
  • Water Flow: They are used to slow-moving waters, so moderate water flow is best. Avoid strong currents, as they may cause stress.

Feeding

  • Diet: Pristella Tetras are omnivores and are not fussy eaters. They can be fed a staple diet of high-quality flakes or micro-pellets. Supplement this with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to enhance their coloration and overall health.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them 1-2 times a day, giving them only as much food as they can consume within a couple of minutes to avoid overfeeding and water pollution.
  • Variety: Offering a varied diet will keep them healthy and vibrant, ensuring they get all the necessary nutrients.
