The Chilli Rasbora (Boraras brigittae), also known as the Mosquito Rasbora or the Brigittae Rasbora, is a small and colorful freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. It is prized for its vibrant coloration and peaceful nature, making it a popular choice for nano tanks and community aquariums. Here’s a comprehensive guide to caring for Chilli Rasboras:

Tank Setup

  1. Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended. Though they are small fish, larger tanks are better for maintaining stable water conditions and providing adequate space.

  2. Substrate: Use a soft substrate such as sand or fine gravel. A dark substrate can enhance the coloration of the fish and mimic their natural habitat.

  3. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22-28°C (72-82°F). Maintain a stable temperature within this range.
    • pH: 5.0-7.0. Chilli Rasboras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
    • Hardness: They thrive in soft to moderately hard water. Aim for 1-10 dGH.
    • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS around 50-150 ppm for optimal health.
  4. Filtration: Use a gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter or a small hang-on-back filter with a low flow rate. Chilli Rasboras prefer calm water and can be stressed by strong currents.

  5. Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. While Chilli Rasboras do not have specific lighting requirements, subdued lighting can mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.

  6. Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots and cover with plants, driftwood, and rocks. A well-planted tank with some open swimming space is ideal. They appreciate having places to hide and explore.

Diet

  • Food: Offer a varied diet including high-quality micro pellets, flake food, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. They also benefit from occasional vegetable matter like spirulina flakes. Ensure that the food particles are small enough for their tiny mouths.
