Forktail Rainbow (Pseudomugil furcatus) is a small and attractive freshwater fish known for its striking coloration and peaceful nature. It is a great choice for a community tank due to its small size and calm temperament. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for Forktail Rainbows:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended. A larger tank provides more swimming space and helps maintain stable water conditions.
  • Aquascape: Provide a well-planted tank with plenty of swimming space. Use live plants like Java moss, Cryptocoryne, and Vallisneria, and include driftwood and rocks to create a natural environment with hiding spots.
  • Substrate: A soft substrate like fine gravel or sand is ideal. This allows for easy maintenance and prevents damage to the fish.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Bright lighting can lead to algae growth, so aim for balanced lighting that supports plant health without encouraging excessive algae.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Forktail Rainbows prefer water temperatures between 72-78°F (22-26°C). Use a reliable heater to maintain a stable temperature within this range.
  • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Stability in pH is important for their health.
  • Hardness: They can adapt to various water hardness levels but prefer moderate hardness, with a general hardness (GH) of 8-12 dGH.
  • Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes (20-30% weekly). Ensure ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 ppm and keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Use a high-quality water conditioner to treat tap water before adding it to the tank.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: Use a filtration system that provides both mechanical and biological filtration. A hang-on-back (HOB) filter or a canister filter works well.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Forktail Rainbows prefer gentle to moderate water movement, so adjust the filter output to create a soft current.

Feeding

  • Diet: Forktail Rainbows are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets as their staple diet. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
  • Variety: Providing a varied diet helps ensure they receive all necessary nutrients and keeps them active and healthy.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice a day. Offer only as much food as they can consume within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.
