Fontosa Red (Boulengerochromis microlepis), also known as the Red Fontosa is a striking and vibrant cichlid species known for its vivid red coloration. This fish is highly prized for its beauty and unique appearance, but it requires specific care to thrive in an aquarium setting. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for the Fontosa Red:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 gallons is recommended, but larger tanks are preferable to provide ample space and maintain stable water conditions.
  • Aquascape: Create a well-structured environment with plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and large caves. The fish will appreciate a tank setup that mimics their natural habitat with varied structures and open swimming areas.
  • Substrate: Use a soft substrate such as sand or fine gravel. This helps in maintaining the health of the fish and makes it easier to keep the tank clean.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is adequate. Avoid excessively bright lighting, as it can cause stress and encourage algae growth.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Fontosa Reds prefer water temperatures between 75-80°F (24-27°C). Use a reliable heater to maintain a stable temperature within this range.
  • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Consistency in pH is important for their health.
  • Hardness: They can adapt to various water hardness levels but prefer moderate hardness, with a general hardness (GH) of 8-12 dGH.
  • Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes (20-30% weekly). Ensure ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 ppm and keep nitrates below 20 ppm. Use a high-quality water conditioner to treat tap water before adding it to the tank.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: Use a filtration system that provides both mechanical and biological filtration. A canister filter or a high-capacity hang-on-back (HOB) filter is suitable for handling the bioload of these larger fish.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Fontosa Reds appreciate good oxygenation and gentle currents, so adjust the filter output to create a soft flow.

Feeding

  • Diet: Fontosa Reds are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality pellets or flakes as their staple diet. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped fish or shrimp.
  • Variety: Providing a varied diet ensures they receive all necessary nutrients and helps keep them healthy and vibrant.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them once or twice a day. Offer only as much food as they can consume within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.
