Crystal Black Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis), also known as Crystal Black Caridina Shrimp, are a strikingly beautiful freshwater shrimp species popular among aquarists for their unique black and white banding. These shrimp require more specific care compared to other shrimp species like Neocaridina, but with proper attention to their needs, they can thrive and breed in a home aquarium. Here's a comprehensive care guide for Crystal Black Shrimp:
Tank Size and Setup
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended to provide stable water conditions. Larger tanks (20 gallons or more) are preferable, especially if you're planning on keeping a sizable colony or breeding them.
- Substrate: Use a shrimp-specific substrate designed to buffer pH and maintain slightly acidic conditions. Substrates like ADA Aquasoil or other buffering substrates help maintain the ideal water parameters for Crystal Black Shrimp.
- Plants and Decor: Incorporate plenty of live plants, such as Java moss, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne. These plants provide hiding spots, surfaces for biofilm growth, and contribute to a more natural and secure environment. You can also include driftwood and small rocks to create additional hiding places and grazing surfaces.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly intense lighting, as it can cause stress and promote excessive algae growth. Light should be balanced to support plant health and shrimp activity.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: Crystal Black Shrimp prefer cooler water, ideally between 68-76°F (20-24°C). Consistent temperature control is crucial, as they are sensitive to sudden fluctuations.
- pH: These shrimp thrive in slightly acidic water, with a pH range of 5.5-6.0 A stable, slightly acidic environment is essential for their health.
- Hardness: They require soft water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-6 dGH and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 0-2 dKH. Low KH helps maintain stable, slightly acidic water.
- TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Aim for a TDS range of 100-180 ppm. A TDS meter can help monitor water quality and ensure the appropriate mineral content.
- Water Quality: Crystal Black Shrimp are highly sensitive to water quality. Perform regular water changes (10-20% weekly) to maintain low levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate (ideally under 10 ppm). Use a high-quality water conditioner and avoid copper-based medications, as copper is toxic to shrimp.
3. Filtration and Water Flow
- Filtration: Use a gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter or a low-flow internal filter. Sponge filters are ideal as they provide mechanical filtration, aeration, and a surface for beneficial bacteria and biofilm. Crystal Black Shrimp prefer well-oxygenated but gently moving water.
- Water Flow: Ensure water flow is gentle to moderate. Excessive current can stress the shrimp, so adjust the filter output to create a calm environment.
Feeding
- Diet: Crystal Black Shrimp are omnivorous and require a balanced diet. Offer high-quality shrimp pellets or granules as their staple food. Look for foods specifically designed for Caridina shrimp, as these contain essential nutrients.
- Supplemental Foods: Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables (such as spinach, zucchini, or cucumber), algae wafers, and occasional protein sources like bloodworms or daphnia. Indian almond leaves or other leaf litter can be added as a natural food source and for their beneficial tannins.
- Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts once daily or every other day. Provide only what the shrimp can consume within a few hours to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues. Uneaten food should be removed to prevent it from decaying.
