Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), also known as Banded Panchax or Rocket Killifish, are small, colorful, and lively fish popular in the aquarium hobby. Their vibrant patterns and relatively easy care make them a great choice for nano tanks and community aquariums. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for Clown Killifish:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 5 gallons is recommended for a small group. Larger tanks (10 gallons or more) are preferable if keeping them in a community setting or larger groups, as this will provide more stable water conditions and space.
  • Tank Shape: A longer tank is preferred over a tall one due to their natural swimming patterns.
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel can be used. The substrate choice is not critical, but a darker substrate can help enhance their colors.
  • Plants and Decor: Use plenty of live or artificial plants to create a densely planted environment. Floating plants are especially beneficial as they provide cover and help diffuse lighting. Include driftwood, rocks, and other decorations to create hiding spots and a natural environment.
  • Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is sufficient. These fish prefer subdued lighting, which can be achieved using floating plants to create shaded areas.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 68-79°F (20-26°C). Clown Killifish are quite adaptable but prefer warmer waters within this range.
  • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Stability is more important than hitting an exact pH number.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-12 dGH. These conditions mimic their natural habitat.
  • Water Quality: Excellent water quality is crucial. Perform regular water changes (20-30% weekly) to maintain low nitrate levels. Use a reliable filter to keep the water clean and oxygenated.

Filtration and Water Flow

  • Filtration: Use a gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter or a small internal filter with adjustable flow. Clown Killifish prefer calm waters, and strong currents should be avoided to reduce stress.
  • Water Flow: Ensure the water flow is gentle to moderate. They are not strong swimmers and may struggle in strong currents.

Feeding

  • Diet: Clown Killifish are carnivorous and primarily feed on small insects and larvae in the wild. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of high-quality micro-pellets or flakes designed for small fish.
  • Live and Frozen Foods: Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworms. These foods help bring out their natural hunting behaviors and vibrant colors.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed them small amounts once or twice a day. Offer only what they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.
