Tank Setup

1. Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended. Larger tanks are preferable to provide ample space and to help maintain stable water conditions.

2. Substrate: Use a soft substrate such as sand or fine gravel. It should be gentle to avoid injury to the fish and facilitate easy cleaning.

3. Water Parameters:

   • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F). Maintain a stable temperature within this range.
   • pH: 6.0-7.5. Checkerboard Barbs prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
   • Hardness: They thrive in moderately hard water. Aim for 5-15 dGH.
   • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS around 100-200 ppm for optimal health.

4. Filtration: Use a good filtration system, such as a hang-on-back filter or a canister filter. Ensure the flow is gentle to moderate, as Checkerboard Barbs prefer moderate water movement.

5. Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. While Checkerboard Barbs do not have specific lighting needs, good lighting enhances their appearance and makes it easier to observe them.

6. Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots and swimming areas with plants, driftwood, and rocks. They appreciate a well-planted tank with open swimming spaces.

Diet

• Food: Offer a varied diet including high-quality flake food, pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They also benefit from occasional vegetable matter like spirulina flakes.
