The Boa Caridina shrimp, also known as Caridina cf. cantonensis "Boa," is a beautiful and relatively rare freshwater shrimp known for its striking patterns and vibrant colors. Proper care is essential to keep them healthy and maintain their unique appearance. Here’s a comprehensive guide to caring for Boa Caridina shrimp:

Tank Setup

  1. Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks are better for maintaining stable water conditions and providing ample space.

  2. Substrate: Use a fine substrate like sand or specialized shrimp soil. Shrimp soil can help buffer the water to maintain optimal pH levels, but fine sand or gravel can also be used if you prefer.

  3. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22-26°C (72-78°F). Keep the temperature stable and avoid sudden fluctuations.
    • pH: 6.0-6.8. Boa Caridina shrimp prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal. Aim for 4-6 dGH. Caridina shrimp are sensitive to water hardness.
    • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS around 100-160 ppm. Low TDS is generally preferred for these shrimp.
  4. Filtration: A gentle filter is best, such as a sponge filter or a hang-on-back filter with a low flow rate. Strong currents can stress the shrimp, so ensure the filter provides gentle water movement.

  5. Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. While Boa Caridina shrimp do not have specific lighting needs, good lighting helps in showcasing their colors and makes it easier to observe their behavior.

  6. Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots with plants, driftwood, and rocks. Boa Caridina shrimp appreciate a well-planted tank with some open swimming space.

Diet

  • Food: Offer a varied diet including high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and sinking granules. Supplement with occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, or bloodworms. Blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach, or carrots can also be added. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water quality issues.
