Black Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), also known as the Purple Emperor Tetra, is a striking and peaceful freshwater fish popular in the aquarium hobby due to its distinctive coloration, elegant fin shapes, and active behavior. Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of Colombia, they are a hardy species well-suited for community tanks. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for Black Emperor Tetras:

Tank Size and Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a small group of Black Emperor Tetras, ideally housing them in groups of 6 or more. Larger tanks are beneficial as they provide more swimming space and stability in water parameters.
  • Substrate: Use a dark, sandy or fine gravel substrate to mimic their natural habitat. Darker substrates help accentuate their colors and provide a more natural look.
  • Plants and Decor: Include plenty of live plants such as Java fern, Amazon swords, Anubias, and floating plants like water lettuce. These provide cover, create a sense of security, and simulate their natural environment. Adding driftwood and rocks can create hiding spots and territorial boundaries, making the tank more comfortable for the fish.
  • Lighting: Moderate to subdued lighting is preferred. Using floating plants can help diffuse light and create shaded areas, which the fish will appreciate.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C). Black Emperor Tetras thrive in these stable, tropical temperatures.
  • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH.
  • Water Quality: Consistently good water quality is important for their health. Perform regular water changes (20-30% weekly) to keep ammonia and nitrite levels at 0 ppm and nitrates below 20 ppm. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so a well-maintained tank is essential.

Feeding

  • Diet: Black Emperor Tetras are omnivores and should be offered a varied diet to keep them healthy and vibrant. High-quality flake food or small pellets can be used as their staple diet.
  • Live/Frozen Foods: Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and micro worms. These foods provide essential nutrients and help enhance their coloration.
