Blue Bolt Caridina shrimp, also known as Caridina cf. cantonensis "Blue Bolt," are a striking and sought-after freshwater shrimp known for their brilliant blue coloration and contrasting white markings. They require specific care to maintain their vibrant colors and overall health. Here’s a comprehensive guide to their care:

Tank Setup

  1. Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended. Larger tanks provide better stability and more space for the shrimp to thrive.

  2. Substrate: Use a fine substrate like sand or specialized shrimp soil. Shrimp soil can help buffer the water and maintain the desired pH levels.

  3. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22-26°C (72-78°F). Maintain a stable temperature and avoid sudden fluctuations.
    • pH: 5.0-5.7 Blue Bolt Caridina shrimp prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
    • Hardness: Soft water is ideal. Aim for 4-6 dGH. Caridina shrimp are sensitive to water hardness.
    • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Maintain TDS around 100-160 ppm. Low TDS is generally preferred for these shrimp.
  4. Filtration: A gentle filtration system is best. Sponge filters are ideal as they provide gentle water movement and additional oxygenation without disturbing the shrimp.

  5. Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. A well-lit tank helps showcase the shrimp’s vibrant colors and makes it easier to observe their behavior.

Diet

  • Food: Offer a varied diet including high-quality shrimp food, algae wafers, and sinking pellets. Supplement with blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water quality issues.
